Tangier’s iconic places

The places everyone falls in love with — and how long it takes to get there with a private driver.

Kasbah
The fortified heart of the old city

Kasbah

Drive time: 15 min

Perched on the highest point of the medina, the Kasbah has watched over the Strait for centuries. Walk through Bab el Kasbah to Dar el Makhzen, the former sultan’s palace — now a museum — and look out over the port towards Spain.

Local tip: Come in the late afternoon, when the walls turn golden and the viewpoints are at their best.

Cap Spartel
The lighthouse where two seas meet

Cap Spartel

Drive time: 30 min

At the north-western tip of Africa, the Cap Spartel lighthouse marks the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. On clear days the Spanish coast feels within reach.

Local tip: Sunset here is spectacular — pair it with the Caves of Hercules on the way back.

Caves of Hercules
Legendary sea caves

Caves of Hercules

Drive time: 35 min

Legend says Hercules rested here after his labours. The highlight is the famous opening onto the ocean, shaped like the map of Africa.

Local tip: Go at low tide to reach the beach below the caves.

Achakkar Beach
Wild Atlantic sands

Achakkar Beach

Drive time: 25 min

A long Atlantic beach just below the Caves of Hercules, with camel rides, surfers and beach cafés serving grilled sardines.

Local tip: The Atlantic is cool and the currents strong — swim only where others do.

Tangier Medina
Lanes, souks and the Grand Socco

Tangier Medina

Drive time: 15 min

From the Grand Socco to the Petit Socco, the medina is a tangle of lanes lined with spice stalls, tailors and cafés where writers and painters once lingered. Lose yourself — your driver will pick you up at the gate.

Local tip: Start at the Grand Socco and walk downhill to the Petit Socco for a mint tea.

Café Hafa
Mint tea above the Strait

Café Hafa

Drive time: 15 min

Open since 1921, Café Hafa’s terraces cascade down the Marshan cliff towards the sea. Writers and rock stars came for the tea and the view — so should you.

Local tip: Order a mint tea and a bowl of bissara, and arrive before sunset for a front-row terrace.
